The process

From an idea to a physical work

Five steps, true of every work the studio makes, from an image, drawn for the grid, or from a rule. Colour, parts and depth are developed into a construction plan, then reviewed before the physical build.

   The source

   An existing image, a design drawn for the grid, or a rule that creates a composition. We establish what matters in the work and what the material can bring to it.

2. 02

   The interpretation

   The studio decides what is subject, what recedes and how deep, in plate steps, when the work comes from an image; a design drawn for the grid is taken as drawn. Colour, scale, surface and depth are considered together. For collaborations, the artist reviews the proposed interpretation before approving the design.

3. 03

   The parts

   The design uses available brick colours and part shapes. Our catalogue records footprint, height and connections for 316 moulds. Part selection shapes both the surface and the construction.

4. 04

   The checks

   The construction plan is checked for placement, support and clearance, with availability and cost checked against the inventory record. That is provably: the design is proven here, and the physical build is inspected against it at the bench.

5. 05

   The build

   The builder follows a book written from the same file as the construction plan. Assembly, mounting, inspection and packing turn the approved design into a work ready for delivery.

A digital render shows the proposed construction. It is labelled separately from a photograph of an assembled work. The construction record identifies the source, parts, depth and design version. You can also explore the current engine version, 3.24.
